When Fred and Kathy Kuhman relocated to Walhalla, SC from south Florida in 1977, they realized there was only one self-storage facility in Oconee County down by Clemson. Finding a good location in West Union, Kathy and Fred put up their first building, gradually adding six more. The buildings are pre-engineered buildings constructed of 26-gauge steel on concrete slabs with 8 x 8 roll up doors with double lock positions. As a service to customers, the Kuhmans sell secure round disc locks at cost.

I'm changing my 5 star review to 0 we rented from them several times and used a total of 3 separate units there were no issues until this last time when we were removing our belongings basically because they upped the rent I think to pay for the expansion! Coincidence? The issue was everything on one side was ruined and covered in heavy mold! A 100+year old wooden hutch was completely delaminated and covered in mold!
As we moved our belongings we found more items damaged beyond any future use! When telling them about it we got nothing but excuses and they didn't help with out insurance! They actually worked against us on any claim to get reimbursed for the damages! We were told that a previous tenant had a couch in there that was completely covered in mold (so they knew the unit was contaminated and admitted it ) how our stuff became so moldy was probably because the unit was not properly cleaned after that couch was removed by the past tenant!
And water found its way into it while we rented it! There was water stains on the right side wall inside the unit about 12 above the floor! Sure we left a few items after we left because the transfer to the new facility took a lot longer because we had to sort through everything looking for damages and mold not it transfer it to the new location! Also we were getting ready for vacation and this whole ordeal should only have taken 2-3 days max!
I am really angry they actually worked against us in filling a claim! They acted like they were going to have to pay for the damages? No our insurance company would but we were rejected because they refused to admit any water could have entered the unit during the bad storms we had! We lost thousands and they had the nerve to call like we owed them something because of a couple small items left behind!
So if you have insurance on your belongings and anything happens short of a tornado tearing the place down don't expect any help from them if you ever have to file a claim! They said most people don't have insurance why should they you won't be able to use it if something happens while renting from them! (The moral of the story our belongings were in other bins longer at this place with no damages the same exact belongings!
How does something happen like this if excessive water didn't get in and the mold was already seeded! I have a dashcam on my vehicle and I saved the entire conversation with the woman we told about this just Incase they denied admission of a previous mold issue! I will post it if they try to lie about what was said!) this shows what kind of people run the place!
